Ear Candling in Melbourne: What It Is, What It Isn't, and Who It Helps
Ear candling is one of those treatments that tends to divide people. Some have never heard of it. Others have strong opinions about it without ever having tried it. I've been offering ear and sinus candling at my Bayside studio for years, and I want to give you an honest, no-fluff explanation of what it actually involves
What is ear candling?
Ear candling (sometimes called thermal auricular therapy) involves placing a hollow, fabric candle — coated in beeswax or paraffin — gently at the entrance to the ear canal. The candle is lit at the far end, and the slow, controlled burn creates a gentle warmth and mild negative pressure. The sensation is deeply relaxing. Most clients describe it as warm, calming and slightly tingly.
What it isn't
Ear candling does not 'suck out' earwax or debris from deep within the ear canal. That's a myth. What it does do is create gentle warmth and stimulation around the ear, which many people find relieves a sense of pressure, fullness or congestion — particularly for blocked ears and sinuses, headaches from sinus pressure, the feeling of fullness after flying or swimming, and general tension in the jaw, neck and head area.
What about sinus candling?
I also offer sinus candling, focused on the sinus areas of the face. Many clients find this particularly helpful during hayfever season or when carrying congestion from a cold. The two treatments can be combined in a single session, which is what most clients opt for.
What to expect
You'll lie comfortably on your side while I place the candle gently at the ear opening. I monitor it carefully throughout — you are never left alone. After one ear is complete, we move to the other side. The whole session takes around 45–60 minutes.
Is it right for you?
If you have a perforated eardrum, grommets, or an active ear infection, ear candling is not appropriate. For everyone else who's been curious — I genuinely encourage you to try it. Book an ear candling session: www.nickithomson.com.au/bookings
