Living with Lipoedema: What Helps (From Someone Who Knows)

I was diagnosed with lipoedema after years of not quite having the right words for what I was experiencing. The disproportionate swelling. The tenderness. The frustration of trying everything and feeling like nothing worked. If any of that resonates with you, I want you to know — you're not imagining it. And there are things that genuinely help.

What is lipoedema?

Lipoedema is a chronic condition characterised by the abnormal accumulation of fat beneath the skin, typically in the legs, thighs, hips and sometimes arms. It almost exclusively affects women, often developing during hormonal shifts. It's not caused by diet or lifestyle, and it doesn't respond to standard weight loss the way regular fat does. Many women spend years blaming themselves for something that was never within their control.

What has genuinely helped me

Lymphatic massage — Regular Manual Lymphatic Drainage reduces fluid congestion around lipoedemic tissue, eases tenderness, and gives the body a clearer pathway to manage inflammation. I recommend it as a consistent, ongoing part of managing the condition.

Compression garments — Well-fitted compression during the day helps prevent fluid from pooling. Getting properly fitted by a lymphoedema therapist makes a significant difference.

Gentle, low-impact movement — Walking, swimming, aqua yoga and rebounding are particularly beneficial because they stimulate lymphatic flow without excessive impact.

Hydration — The lymphatic system is fluid-based. Staying well hydrated supports every aspect of lymphatic function.

Nervous system regulation — Chronic pain and swelling place constant stress on the nervous system. Treatments like lymphatic massage and far infrared sauna support nervous system regulation — and that matters more than people realise.
