What Is Lymphatic Massage — and Do You Actually Need It?

If you've heard the term 'lymphatic massage' but aren't quite sure what it involves — or whether it's right for you — you're not alone. It's one of the questions I get asked most often, and I love answering it. Because once people understand what the lymphatic system actually does, it changes the way they think about their health entirely.

What is the lymphatic system?

Your lymphatic system is a network of vessels, nodes and fluid that runs throughout your entire body. Think of it as your body's internal drainage and immune system rolled into one. It collects excess fluid, filters out waste and toxins, and transports immune cells to where they're needed.

Unlike your heart, which has its own pump, the lymphatic system relies on movement, breathing and manual stimulation to keep flowing. When it slows down — through illness, inactivity, stress, surgery or certain conditions — fluid can build up, causing swelling, heaviness, fatigue and inflammation.

So what does lymphatic massage actually do?

Lymphatic massage (also called Manual Lymphatic Drainage, or MLD) uses gentle, rhythmic strokes to encourage lymph fluid to move through the body more efficiently. The pressure is light — much lighter than a regular remedial massage — because the lymphatic vessels sit just beneath the skin. The goal is to reduce congestion in the lymphatic system, helping your body clear waste more effectively and restore balance.

Who does it help?

In my practice I work with clients experiencing: lymphoedema and lipoedema; post-surgical recovery; fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue; general puffiness and bloating; compromised immunity; and stress and nervous system dysregulation. I also work with people who simply want to feel less heavy and more energised. You don't need a diagnosis to benefit.

What does a session feel like?

Most clients are surprised by how gentle it is. Sessions at Serendipity are quiet, warm and unhurried. The strokes are slow and light — almost meditative. Many people fall asleep on the table. Afterwards, clients commonly notice they feel lighter, less puffy, and unusually calm.
